The Single Gals vacation tips:

We have polled our panel of single ladies as to what they do to prepare for vacation so here are the top 10 things we ladies should check off our list:

1)      Get make sure to remove all excess or unwanted hair below the waist or wherever you have stray hairs running amuck. Gals you do not want to be worried about shaving your legs daily. Take care of that before you leave, you’ll be glad you did.

2)      Get a pedicure especially if you are going somewhere tropical. You do not want your knarely winter toes poking out of your cute sling backs.

3)      Bring condoms, ladies you have to be prepared for all things... even a chance at a HOT fling.

4)      Pack your matching panties and bras sets, just in case you need to use tip #3.

5)      Get a travel plan for your cell phone.  Just a basic text messaging plan will suffice just in case you get separated from the gal pal that you are traveling with. This way you can text his hotel room #.  You always have to make sure that your gal pal is safe.

6)      Pack one pair of sexy heels, your favourite dress and make sure you have one glam night while away, this more than likely result in having to use your data plan.

7)      Get a manicure... if your toes are going to be pretty so should your hands.

8)      Make sure to pack a bathing suit, flip flops, change of gitch and a sundress in your carry-on just in case you and your luggage get separated.

9)      Bring Gravol and Advil, you party girls know this is a must!

10)   Make sure your passport is up to date.

Now you are set for the vacation! Grab your luggage, your traveling gal pal and hit the friendly skies. Wherever your Single Gal travels take you, have fun, be safe and be your fabulous selves and let the world unfold.

Happy Travels,

Self Defense..It may save your life

Last night I was blissfully walking through the underground parking of my building. I was daydreaming and not paying attention to my surroundings, when all of a sudden out of nowhere this man appeared. He was not a threat to me but I realized had he been I would never have seen him coming. Girls...We should always be aware of what’s going on around us! This does not mean we have to walk around in fear; if we are aware we can avoid situations if needed.

Having grown up in one of Toronto’s less desirable neighbourhoods I learned a few survival tricks. One of the first things that someone showed me was to walk with my house keys between my fingers. They now become a weapon; you can use them to take someone’s eyes out (thankfully I never had to use them).

Next you must know how to get away if someone grabs your wrists. It’s very simple and YES is does work! I did this move instinctively. I was walking home from work one evening and as I walk past this man on the sidewalk he grabs my wrist with both hands and tells me that he wants me to go with him to Pizza Hut for a drink. I said NO and tried to pull away but his grip tightened. He kept insisting that I go with him, and I kept telling him NO, he was getting more aggressive and I was getting more fearful when I finally clasped my hands together, twisted my wrist and pulled free. Once free I ran as fast as my legs would go, which it seems is lightening speed. This video shows how this is done, I should have kicked him as well but once free I ran. Do what you need to get free.

Also there is the tried and true kicking him in the groin not sure why I didn’t do that..funny you never know what you’ll do in those situations. Your instincts will kick in but it helps to know some basic self defense moves because they may save your life. If you can get your hands on some mace do it. I am not sure why it is illegal in Canada but I rather go to court because I used my illegal mace than become a statistic.

Here are some links to basic self defense moves..I highly recommend taking a Self Defense class it may save your life.

Safe travels!

Thinking of getting inked?

I have just put down a $100 deposit for my tattoo which is scheduled for Friday July 23 and will take between 4 – 5 hours to do. Now ladies this is not an impulsive decision, if you are thinking of getting one make sure you know without a doubt that you will be happy with it in 5 years, 10 years, 20 years from now. I was recently talking with a friend that got a tattoo on impulse when she was younger because she was dating a guy with tattoos and thought it would be cool to get one. She got it on her stomach and now regrets it.

I've been thinking about doing this for the last two years, I wanted something meaningful to me, the ideas have changed over the years but I finally decided on getting a portrait tattoo in loving memory of Shmoo and Yoda. They were my two loves and both were taken from me in very traumatic ways.  I still have not gotten over the loss of Shmoo and it has been over a year, so in his and Yoda’s honor I will have their beautiful faces put on my shoulder.

Once I  made the decision as to what I wanted to get done, next on my list was finding the right tattoo artist.I was on the hunt for one that specialized in portraits, I asked friends, looked at the work of at least 50 different artists. This to me was the hardest part because there are so many talented tattoo artists out there. I finally found one at the Tattoo Convention. I am nervous and excited, probably more excited since I have already had a tattoo done I know what to expect, but I am still a little nervous because it will take 4 hours or more.

Now ladies, if you are seriously thinking of getting inked, put a lot of thought into it, do your research. You need to think about where you want your tattoo, that’s very important. Do you want it to always be seen, do you want to be able to hide it when need be, or not to be seen at all, unless by someone very, very close to you. Also please refrain from getting the tramp stamp that is so 90’s and it’s been done. (Just my personal opinion no offense intended, I have friends that have great work done on their lower backs) Here is a link for common questions you may have and things you should consider when you first get a tattoo Beginner’s Guide to Getting a Tattoo.

We at the Single Gals camp love tattoos especially on hot dudes. However ladies if you have one send it to us with a little blurb as to the meaning behind it  and we will post them in a special blog dedicated to our Inked SG Followers. E-mail us at single@single-gals.com

Not all tires are the same...Who knew?

Monday night I go to grab my car for night school and what do I find waiting for me but a flat tire. My first reaction was “You got to be kidding me” and than I get the flashbacks of the last time I tried to change a tire and scraped my knuckles to a bloody pulp. Now the stress headache kicks in which is a prefect addition to my 45 minute ride on the moving sauna. During that ride I go through a various rollercoaster ride of emotions, and thoughts, first it’s pity “why me”, than it’s anger “If that man rubs against me one more time he‘s getting an elbow in the groin” and than its loneliness “if only I had someone in my life then he would take care of my tire and the pervert on the bus”.

I survive my bus ride and once in my nice air conditioned classroom I started to think a little more clearly about the situation. It really wasn’t so bad it was just a flat tire after all. I remembered that I had renewed my CAA membership a couple of weeks ago.  So in my clear headed moment of genius I think to myself, well rather than have CAA put on my “Donut tire” why not buy a new tire and they can put on that one, saving me the trip to a dealership to have them do it. GENIUS! So my fellow Einstein drives me to Wal-Mart, to get a new tire. While there I realize that I would need to know my tire size, so while my friend is running around looking for the big book that lists every car made and their tire size I do a Google search (NOTE: Gal’s invest in a phone with internet it is a girls best friend) I tell the guy what I want and I leave the store quite proud of myself. Also it did not help that my fellow Einstein, was praising my genius.

I get home with my new tire; since I am so pleased with myself I am just about beaming with pride. In my elevator there are a couple of dudes who kept looking at my tire, I’m thinking to myself, ‘Yes boys you got it this girl knows what she is doing, hmp who needs a man!’ I call CAA and within 15 minutes a CAA hero is at my door, we get to my car and I pull out my nice new shiny tire, he just looks at me like I pulled out a curling iron, he ask “what’s that?” (Uh it’s a tire genius) I said it’s my tire to replace the flat one. Well he laughs and tells me that he can’t put that tire on; it has to be done at a shop. What isn’t a tire a tire? Apparently not! Putting on a donut and a regular tire are to very different processes as it turns out. Who knew? Also you can’t just put on one new tire you would have to at least change two tires, something to do with balance.

My flat tire was caused because I ran over a screw, so the CAA hero tells me he can plug it but that he is not allowed to so. So I say “I have $10 bucks will that help?’ It takes him all of five minutes to fix my tire. Yippee now I can drive my dumb blond ass back up to Wal-Mart and return the nice new shiny tire. Now ladies I did tell all my gal pals my plans for my tire and they all thought it was genius, so I know I am not the only gal that has no clue about tires. The moral of this story is, if you are a Single Gal and have a car make sure you have a CAA membership, also call them first before you get any bright ideas no matter how genius your friends think you are, or call a male in your life because they seemed genetically disposed to just know these things.

Beware of the 'Double Dip"

Recently I’ve been hearing some odd things about my friends’ waxing experiences. First it was Commando Barbie having her poon blown on by her aesthetician. Second was a friend who got a Brazilian done by someone other than her regular waxer and ended up with a massive poon infection. It ended up being so bad her sister called her “Frankin Twat”! She called Telehealth Ontario, they asked her if the salon had used a metal spatula to spread the wax, YES they did, Telehealth told her that the salon was double dipping!! They are using the same applicator to wax various clients! Gross I don’t know about you but the thought of someone else’s Poon Germs being spread on my most delicate area, scares me.  Since the wax is not hot enough to kill germs the germs survive and can be passed on. Lucky for ‘Frankin Twat” her infection was nothing more than a bacterial infection and it eventually cleared up after having to take medicated baths 3 times a day.

So ladies when going to a salon ask them if they use wooden spatulas. Here in Ontario it is proper practice and any salon that doesn’t should be reported to the Better Business Bureau.  Once the wooden spatula is dipped and the wax has been spread to your skin they should be disposed of and a new spatula is used for the next application. It is bad enough that waxing hurts but we really do not need to worry about getting viral infections such as HIV, Hepatitis B and C, and warts, as well as, conjunctivitis, bacterial and fungal infections.

Here are the top 5 things a Gal should consider before waxing as per the Vagisil Website  http://www.vagisil.com/special_200604.shtml

  1. Don't choose a waxing salon because the price is right for you. Choose a salon because it upholds high standards of sanitation and its employees are properly credentialed.
  2. Don't feel compelled to have a "Brazilian Wax" because all your friends do. Keep in mind that pubic hair is there for a purpose -- to protect the genital area from infection and trauma. A simple bikini wax is safer.
  3. Don't wax if you are menstruating, on certain medications, such as Acutane, or if you have an active outbreak of any STD.
  4. Be sure the aesthetician treating you protects you both from contamination with simple precautions such as: wearing gloves, cleansing the genital area before and after the procedure, having all clients wear disposable underwear, using disposable spatulas and NEVER double dipping.
  5. Feminine anti-itch creams such as Maximum Strength Gynecort® Anti-Itch Creme (one percent hydrocortisone) or Vagisil® Anti-Itch Creme can help soothe any post-shaving/waxing irritation, but if you develop an infection or skin problem it is advisable that you consult with your gynecologist and also inform the salon of this occurrence.
  6. Don’t have the aesthetician blow on your freshly waxed area

If you have one of the following conditions you should avoid waxing at all cost: women with thin skin, vulvar varicosities, poor circulation, poorly controlled diabetes, genital warts, active herpes and other active skin disorders. Also Gals avoid waxing if you are on the following medications Acutane, steriods and immune suppressive therapies.

What it comes down to it Gals, we need to educate ourselves on what’s involved in our beauty procedures, so do your research, ask the uncomfortable questions and get feedback from others.

The day after the patio

What starts out as a nice girlie get together to chat about the week’s events and dating disasters turns into a big ole drunken pity fest. This leaves you sun-burnt, inebriated and stumbling home in your heels.

It is the morning after, your head feels like it is stuck in a vice grip, your stomach feels like you’ve just taken a ride on the Tilt A Whirl and you’re pretty sure you’ve lost your heel on the way home.

Here are 3 Single Gal tips to get you through the morning after:

1) ADVIL … really the only thing that is going to help with the pounding head at this point is Extra Strength Advil…take two. Preferably try and take them the night before the morning after.

2) GREASY BREAKFAST…Yes this actually helps the hangover so go ahead and fry up some eggs, bacon and home fries. Or better yet, go out to your local greasy spoon!

3) WATER… Lots n’ lots of water, you must re-hydrate your body. Dissolving a 1000mg vitamin C tablet in your water also works wonders!

In regards to that shoe you lost, well girlfriend here is your excuse to go shoe shopping. TO THE MALL!!!!!

Cheers!

Oh No You Didn't...

So you did not heed our advice on the importance of sunscreen and you went and got your drunk ass burnt on the patio. Don’t panic, yes we realize that you look like a lobster but it will fade and hopefully you end up with a great tan. In the meantime here are 3 tips to ease the pain of the burn. As for the hangover stay tuned those tips are coming soon!

1) Aloe… Go and but some Aloe cream and slather it all over the bits and pieces that you’ve burnt. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize get the skin feeling soft again. We don’t want to look like this:

2) Apple Cider Vinegar…This helps to relieve the pain & inflammation of the burn. Just pour some on a cloth and press the burnt areas.

3) Yogurt…Helps cool and hydrate the skin

Now that you have taken care of the burn don’t forget to moisturize everyday. We want our skin soft and smooth for the off chance that we may rub up against a cutie in the grocery store.

Cheers!

The Top 3 Single Gal Patio Lounging must haves:

Hey Single Ladies summer is finally here!!! Get out the flip flops, mini skirts and the lip gloss. This is a great time of year for a Single Gal, it is the time for road trips, umbrella drinks and patios. Here are the top 3 things that we believe a Single Gal must have for looking (and staying) fabulous while hanging on the patio.

1) SUNSCREEN … I know we all own it, but we want to stress how important sunscreen is especially for your face. If preventing skin cancer is not reason enough to use it, then think Wrinkles. We know that no Single Gal wants wrinkles! At least use an SPF 15, but SPF 30 is a must on those really hot sunny days.

2) SUNGLASSES…Invest in a good pair of sunglasses. I know that they can be ridiculously expensive but it is an investment on your eye health. Ladies we want our eyes in perfect health so we don’t miss the chance to bat our eyelashes at the cutie behind us in line at Starbucks.

3) SUN HAT … Yes ladies you should wear a hat, there are so many cute ones out there. Think flirty fun beach hats, cute fitted ball caps, trendy cowboy hat; whatever your style OWN IT!!

Now put on some sunscreen, grab you hat and sunglasses, call up you Single Gal pals and go hit a patio. Don’t forget to lower your sunglasses bat your eyelashes and smile, you never know who will notice.

Cheers!
